What is the Alta Via del Sale?

The Alta Via del Sale is a historic route connecting Piedmont to Liguria, following the ancient commercial roads once used to transport salt from the sea to inland territories.

Today, this route has become one of the most famous cycling itineraries in the Western Alps thanks to its incredible high-altitude gravel roads, breathtaking panoramas, and the wide variety of landscapes it crosses.

The trail passes through alpine and Mediterranean territories between Italy and France, touching military fortifications, alpine refuges, high mountain pastures, and medieval Ligurian villages.

From Limone Piemonte to Ventimiglia | A Journey from Mountains to the Sea

The classic itinerary starts in Limone Piemonte, the historic alpine village at the foot of the Colle di Tenda, and ends in Ventimiglia on the Ligurian coast near the French border.

Between these two points lie more than 100 kilometers of emotions, panoramic gravel roads, and constantly changing scenery.

Colle di Tenda and the Military Fortifications

The first section of the route leads to the famous Colle di Tenda, a historic alpine pass that for centuries represented a strategic connection point between Italy and France.

From here begin the great alpine military roads: wide gravel tracks built between the 19th and 20th centuries to connect the defensive forts scattered along the border. While riding these roads, cyclists still encounter numerous perfectly preserved military fortifications immersed in spectacular mountain landscapes.

The climbs are long but regular, making them perfect for e-bike riding, while the breathtaking panoramas reward every effort.

The Magic of the Via del Sale

The central section of the Alta Via del Sale is probably one of the most beautiful cycling experiences in the Alps.

Here the route remains almost constantly above 1,800–2,200 meters, offering endless views over the Maritime Alps and, on clear days, all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.

One of the most fascinating sections crosses the Bosco delle Navette, a spectacular alpine forest characterized by ancient larch trees and vast high-altitude pastures.

Not far away lies Monte Saccarello, at 2,200 meters the highest peak in Liguria. From the summit, the view stretches from the mountains of Piedmont to the Ligurian coastline.

From Medieval Villages to the Mediterranean

After the high alpine landscapes, the route changes dramatically as it begins the long descent into the Nervia Valley.

The scenery gradually becomes more Mediterranean: chestnut forests give way to terraced olive groves, vineyards, and ancient stone villages.

Along the route, it is worth stopping in the charming inland villages of Pigna, Isolabona, and Dolceacqua, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Liguria thanks to its medieval castle and the famous bridge painted by Claude Monet.

The final kilometers guide riders towards the sea in Ventimiglia, where the crossing ends with the Mediterranean directly in front of you.

Alta Via del Sale by MTB or E-Bike?

Both options are excellent, but in recent years the e-bike has made this itinerary accessible to a much wider audience.

The long alpine climbs become more manageable, allowing riders to fully enjoy the scenery without excessive physical effort. However, good off-road riding experience and decent physical preparation are still necessary, especially for long days in the saddle.

For those looking for a more athletic and demanding adventure, a traditional MTB remains a fantastic choice.
