A spectacular MTB journey along one of the most iconic routes in the Ligurian Alps, following ancient military roads, high-altitude landscapes, and an unforgettable final descent to the Mediterranean Sea. The Via del Sale is much more than a cycling route: it is an adventure that combines nature, history, and adrenaline through three exciting days between the Alps and the Italian Riviera.
The route follows the historic trails once used by salt merchants for centuries, crossing some of the most stunning areas of the Maritime and Ligurian Alps. Riders travel along wide military gravel roads, historic border forts, alpine pastures, and panoramic ridgelines with breathtaking views stretching from the mountains to the sea.
The tour combines high-altitude traverses, mountain refuges surrounded by nature, technical descents, and the charm of Liguria’s inland villages. The final day offers an unforgettable finish: descending from the peaks of the Ligurian Alps towards the Riviera dei Fiori, passing through olive groves, vineyards, and medieval villages before reaching the sea in Bordighera.
An ideal experience for riders with a good level of MTB or e-bike experience who want to discover one of the most fascinating cycling routes in Europe.

DAY 1 – Ventimiglia – Limone Piemonte – Colle dei Signori (2,111 m)
The first day of the tour marks the entrance into the heart of the Maritime Alps and the iconic Via del Sale. Starting from Limone Piemonte, the route passes through the village before beginning a long and steady climb on paved roads, rising from approximately 1,000 meters above sea level to over 1,800 meters at the Colle di Tenda, the historic mountain pass connecting Italy and France.
After a scenic break at altitude, the tour finally enters the realm of the great alpine military roads. From here, riders are immersed in spectacular landscapes featuring wide high-altitude gravel roads, alpine pastures, and ancient fortifications built to defend the alpine border. These military forts, still remarkably well preserved, tell the strategic history of the region and make the route even more fascinating.
The day concludes at Rifugio Don Barbera, located in the heart of the Ligurian Alps Natural Park, where riders can relax, enjoy dinner, spend the night, and recharge their e-bike batteries in preparation for the second stage.
DAY 2 – Colle dei Signori – Colle Melosa (1,545 m)
The second stage is one of the most scenic and spectacular sections of the entire crossing. After an initial climb with breathtaking views over the Ligurian Alps, the route continues along the extraordinary high-altitude gravel roads of the Via del Sale, alternating rideable climbs, panoramic traverses, and long descents immersed in pristine nature.
One of the highlights of the day is the crossing of the enchanting Bosco delle Navette, a unique alpine environment characterized by ancient larch forests and vast mountain pastures, where the scenery constantly changes between woodlands, valleys, and open ridgelines overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
During the day, riders also reach Monte Saccarello, at 2,200 meters the highest peak in Liguria. This symbolic landmark of the crossing offers an extraordinary natural balcony between the Alps and the sea.
The final section of the route features a long and enjoyable descent towards Colle Melosa, nestled in the heart of the Ligurian Alps at an altitude of approximately 1,600 meters, where overnight accommodation is provided in the peaceful silence of the mountains.
DAY 3 – Colle Melosa – Ventimiglia (The Sea)
The final day takes riders from the mountains of the Ligurian Alps all the way to the Mediterranean Sea, following the picturesque Nervia Valley. After the high alpine landscapes of the previous days, the scenery gradually changes as forests give way to olive groves, vineyards, and the charming medieval villages of inland Liguria.
The route alternates between quiet paved roads and enjoyable off-road sections, always surrounded by authentic landscapes and stunning views. During the descent, riders pass through some of the valley’s most beautiful villages, including Pigna, Isolabona, and Dolceacqua, with their stone alleyways, medieval bridges, and timeless atmosphere.
The final kilometers lead to Ventimiglia, where the mountains finally meet the sea. Upon arrival, there is time to celebrate the completion of this extraordinary crossing of the Ligurian Alps with a refreshing swim in the Mediterranean or a cold beer along the seafront.
